You are not special. You are not exceptional.

Wellesley High School teacher David McCullough had apparently had enough of feeding blithering platitudes to his students and decided to tell the truth.

Don’t get me started on this one… but I will say I agree wholeheartedly! You graduate from preschool you get a diploma, you graduate from First Grade you get a diploma, Sixth Grade, Eighth Grade etc… you get a diploma! Sports or Field Day you get a Trophy for just showing up, you don’t have to win, just show up and “Good job here’s a trophy!” Don’t keep score it might hart the losers tiny tender little feeling, turning both teams into a field of uniformed losers zero-zero. Oh but wait there’s more… you get certificate of achievement for just being  you, just for being alive, just for showing up for class. It’s ridiculous, it’s sad and pathetic!

See by the time a kid get to High School they’ve received so many certificate, diplomas, trophies and letters of achievement there is no sense of self-reward or real achievement when graduating High School, they already feel entitled! But yet society wonders why there is so many drop outs… the prize has been diminished to nothing, it’s just another piece of paper to put in a overflowing award box of mediocrity.

That’s not life, that’s not reality and that’s why we have so many little sniveling whiners occupying Wall Street with their hand out! Suck it up whiner and face the truth – you’re not entitled to a trophy just for being alive or doing your job.

Anyway before I ramble further… here’s David McCullough excellent commencement speech…

You are not special.  You are not exceptional.

Contrary to what your u9 soccer trophy suggests, your glowing seventh grade report card, despite every assurance of a certain corpulent purple dinosaur, that nice Mister Rogers and your batty Aunt Sylvia, no matter how often your maternal caped crusader has swooped in to save you… you’re nothing special.

Yes, you’ve been pampered, cosseted, doted upon, helmeted, bubble-wrapped.  Yes, capable adults with other things to do have held you, kissed you, fed you, wiped your mouth, wiped your bottom, trained you, taught you, tutored you, coached you, listened to you, counseled you, encouraged you, consoled you and encouraged you again.  You’ve been nudged, cajoled, wheedled and implored.  You’ve been feted and fawned over and called sweetie pie.  Yes, you have.  And, certainly, we’ve been to your games, your plays, your recitals, your science fairs.  Absolutely, smiles ignite when you walk into a room, and hundreds gasp with delight at your every tweet.  Why, maybe you’ve even had your picture in the Townsman!  [Editor's upgrade: Or The Swellesley Report!] And now you’ve conquered high school… and, indisputably, here we all have gathered for you, the pride and joy of this fine community, the first to emerge from that magnificent new building…

But do not get the idea you’re anything special.  Because you’re not.[...]

“But, Dave,” you cry, “Walt Whitman tells me I’m my own version of perfection!  Epictetus tells me I have the spark of Zeus!”  And I don’t disagree.  So that makes 6.8 billion examples of perfection, 6.8 billion sparks of Zeus.  You see, if everyone is special, then no one is.  If everyone gets a trophy, trophies become meaningless.  In our unspoken but not so subtle Darwinian competition with one another-which springs, I think, from our fear of our own insignificance, a subset of our dread of mortality – we have of late, we Americans, to our detriment, come to love accolades more than genuine achievement.  We have come to see them as the point – and we’re happy to compromise standards, or ignore reality, if we suspect that’s the quickest way, or only way, to have something to put on the mantelpiece, something to pose with, crow about, something with which to leverage ourselves into a better spot on the social totem pole.  No longer is it how you play the game, no longer is it even whether you win or lose, or learn or grow, or enjoy yourself doing it…  Now it’s “So what does this get me?”  As a consequence, we cheapen worthy endeavors, and building a Guatemalan medical clinic becomes more about the application to Bowdoin than the well-being of Guatemalans.  It’s an epidemic – and in its way, not even dear old Wellesley High is immune… one of the best of the 37,000 nationwide, Wellesley High School… where good is no longer good enough, where a B is the new C, and the midlevel curriculum is called Advanced College Placement.  And I hope you caught me when I said “one of the best.”  I said “one of the best” so we can feel better about ourselves, so we can bask in a little easy distinction, however vague and unverifiable, and count ourselves among the elite, whoever they might be, and enjoy a perceived leg up on the perceived competition.  But the phrase defies logic.  By definition there can be only one best.  You‘re it or you’re not.

Amen brother!

Rand Paul’s $500 Billion is cuts…

Rand Paul proposes $500 billion in federal budget cuts

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Rand Paul wants to slash numerous federal programs, including food stamps for the poor, to save $500 billion in a single year.

A legislative proposal Paul introduced on Tuesday would slash $42 billion from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food stamp program — a 30 percent spending reduction. His proposal would eliminate numerous other programs, including the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Paul said the proposal would roll back federal spending to 2008 levels and eliminate what he considers the most wasteful programs.

The Kentucky Republican said he hopes his proposal will spark a dialogue within the Senate about how to repair the nation’s economy.

Notice the AP right out of the box talk about the mean heartless Republican wants to cut food stamps to the poor… every see what’s in the shopping of a poor food stamp shopper? I can’t afford to eat that well every week why should they? Bring the stigma back – I’m not mean and heartless but let’s face it why should you be able to buy chips, ice cream, cokes, candy, etc on food stamps. Save that stuff for people using this thing called money.

But the AP also pointed out mean ol Rand Paul wants to cut money to the Corporation for Liberal Public Broadcasting, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, because we tax payers need to pay for women to cover they naked bodies in chocolate… For the record I have no problem with chocolate, naked women or both together – but I don’t think taxes need to pay for it. Recall… “Karen Finley, who is known for a performance in which she coated her naked body with chocolate to symbolize the oppression of women.”

So anywho… Rand want to also get rid of the Department of Energy, the Department of Education and I say DO IT!! Since the inception of both energy has gotten more expensive and education has gotten worse with Government control. What has either done to improve anything?

Check out this list of ideas for cut and tell me we can’t make these cuts - give it to me and I’ll make even more…

Here are a painfully few examples of waste in the TSA that would like to Unionize and drive up cost…

· $526.95 for one phone call from the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Chicago to Iowa City.

· $1,180 for 20 gallons of Starbucks Coffee — $3.69 a cup — at the Santa Clara Marriott in California.

· $1,540 to rent 14 extension cords at $5 each per day for three weeks at the Wyndham Peaks
Resort and Golden Door Spa in Telluride, Colo.

· $8,100 for elevator operators at the Marriott Marquis in Manhattan.

· $5.4 million claimed for nine months’ salary for the chief executive of an “event logistics” firm that
received a contract before it was incorporated and went out of business after the contract ended.

So before I sign off for today I might add this little note… the two biggest programs that are breaking this country are both liberal created entitlement programs SSI and Medicare… everyone talks about how they are cost us trillions… so remember it was FDR that started SSI and LBJ that started Medicare … who in there right mind thinks for a minute ObamaCare is going to save money? Who? Well….? So when this country goes broke and we have to hang a forsale sign on the Capitol door – thank the liberals and their socialist programs.

Movie of the Week #53 – Buck Rogers in the 25th Century

Filed under: Movie of the Week — Tags: , — AWG @ 1:46 am

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century

OK not to be confused with the 1939 release this was originally a made for TV movie in 1979 that was turned into a series – it’s hard to find that original movie it’s out there on VHS these days, but the series has been released on DVD and I’ve been watching it on Netflix so while these weeks movie is technically a TV series it’s in place of the fact the actual movie is a tad hard to find! The great thing about this series is it has that all to 70′s and 80′s weekly guest star like Jamie Lee Curtis, Gary Colman (What you talkin’ ’bout Willis?), Cesar Romero (The original Joker), Sid Haig, Frank Gorshin (aka The Riddler from Batman), Ray Walston,  Markie Post and more and I’ve only seen 9 episodes so far. However, let me say how refreshing it is to watch old cheesy TV were men and women were equally sexually exploited as pieces of meat! Gil Gerard who plays Buck – is pretty much a discount Lee Majors of 1979 and Erin Gray is the tight outfit eye candy. Yes the women wear skimpy figure hugging silky outfits and Buck himself get’s auctioned off as a sex puppet or exploited somehow, men ragging on women for being weak, silly women, women ragging on men for being dense male pigs  – ah the good old days before the PC bullshit took over and people could actually be themselves. Cheesy (i.e. crappy) acting, cheesy dialog, cheesy special effects, cheesy costumes and all around good fun. What happened to that kind of TV… hell what happened to the days when you could call someone sugartits or honeybuns without having some get their panties in a wad and file a lawsuit? So anyway what’s it was about…

20th century astronaut is caught in a freak accident in deep space, causing his craft Ranger 3 to be blown into a trajectory that returns him to earth almost 5 centuries later. Earth is recovering from nuclear war and is coming under hostile attack by the Draconian empire. The later series has based on a spaceship exploring the unknown reaches of space.

You can either stream the entire series on Netflix if you have it or buy it at one of these stores. So if you like TV cheese these is some of the best.

So how about a music video filmed in cheap Hindu Bollywood style, sung in Spanish with an Israeli Natalie Portman cameo by American-Venezuelan Devendra Banhart?

Actually I don’t care for the song all that much… it’s not a bad song but without the video I would not have noticed it at all. The video is old school clever with a Rube Goldberg machine feel to it and for that I applaud it… no CGI, no FX – just straight forward clever contraption cool… think of the time and labor that went into making it work.

Happy Birthday Jarheads… Flashback 2009

I’m not a big fan of the Roosevelt’s – any of them, but Eleanor once said…

“The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!”  – Eleanor Roosevelt.

Have a piece of cake...

I need Boots

I know what you might be thinking – you may think I need boots on the ground to campaign for great Americans like Basil Marceaux (dot com) or cross the aisle and help Alvin Green – I mean after all could we do any worse than what we have right now? Really it might be ab improvement. So are the boots I’m talking about?

NO!

I’m talking about regular old work boots you wear on your feet that are made in the good old USA – see I work (don’t be afraid liberals, you should try it – it pays) and all I want to do is get a pair of work boots made in the USA – is that to much to ask for? So being a guy that likes to not only buy America, I like to buy local and keep the my money in my community and my country – crazy I know, but it’s what I do. So I go to the store and I find some boots and I come across some Georgia Boots… are they made in the state of Georgia? Nope – made in China so I pass and walk off mumbling “Georgia my ass”. I go to another store and I look at some Carhartt’s… are they made in the USA? NO! Made in China – Carhartt’s the American working brand made in China! Good grief! So I look at Red Wing’s they are they made in the USA, well some are but this store only had the one’s made in China and seemed surprised that the brands they thought were made in America were all made in China to which I said “Well look at the label genius!” – the search went on… I looked at Carolina Boots, some made in the USA but those were are made by scummy Unions and we know what I think of those – so I looked at Caterpillar Boots; Made in China – Timberline; China – Red Wing WORX; China – John Deere; China – Danner; China and the list goes on and on and on. All made in China (with a few exceptions on a few models).

So somewhat pissed and dismayed I head home and search up “Made in USA work boots” online and come across a website that sold only Made in America work boots – so now I’m in near nirvana, but I don’t like like buying boots online – I want to try them on first for two good reasons 1.) Quality work boots cost about $300 or more and 2.) I spend 10-14 hours a day or longer in them and I want comfort, comfort I’ll pay good money for comfort, so it’s rather important that I have comfortable shoes – I could care less if they are stylish or not. I’m a middle aged, middle class white guy that is more concerned with comfort than style.

Anyway I look at some Red Wing Beckman Round Boots that are made in the USA … well at nearly $300.00 I want to try them on first, I know they are boots and it will take a good 2 or 3 weeks to get them broke in and nobody around here has them and the places that can order them want some non-refundable money to special order them – well hell no I’m not putting non-refundable money down on something that might not fit right, forget it!

So the search goes on and I find the brick and mortar/mail order store in Tennessee not that far from me – I fire off a pithy e-mail about hours “Do you have boots made in America by non-union shops?” They reply that they do, so now I have to find time I do not have to go to Martin, Tennessee to The Shoe Shack (sounds classy huh?) and find some boots. Hopefully made in America in a non-union shop…

So why am I babbling about boots and not politics – well to tell you what you already know that finding products made in America is a job in itself – and everything going on in the wide, wide world of politics is the same old crap – the Obama’s are out of touch with the American people, the Democrats are corrupt idiots, the Republicans are spineless worms and the tax payer is getting screwed while 47% of the country suckles upon the government tit add to that unemployment is high, the debt is huge and tax and spending never stops and what’s new? And as goes the world of politics – life goes on and I need a new pair of boots – the only question is will I find any that might my lofty demands?
