I received my notice in mail today that I would be receiving a Census form in the mail ….why I need a piece of mail to tell me I’m receiving a piece of mail is beyond me, but then I got to thinking (insert dialog – Danger Will Robertson Danger!) … why mail out mail to tell you about mail? Well the post office is for all practical matters – broke so what better way to funnel a ton of money to the broke-ass government ran post office than by sending out needless mail to 160 million plus households at the taxpayers expense? Not including the cost of the letter, the envelop, time to mail them and wasting my time opening it and reading it! Additionally less I mention that part of the letter’s text was also printed below the main body in Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Korean, and Vietnamese. Why? But that’s another debate…
So what did it cost us few remaining tax payers to send out mail to tell us about mail? Well guess that they got government postal first class rates is what 30-35 cents? Figuring that I guess it ran the taxpayer about $50-$60 million to mail this junk mail out?
If you haven’t seen it yet here is the text and it varies from area to area for what reason I don’t know…
Dear Resident:
About one week from now, you will receive a 2010 Census form in the mail.
When you receive your form, please fill it out and mail it in promptly. Your
response is important. Results from the 2010 Census will be used to help
each community get its fair share of government funds for highways, schools,
health facilities, and many other programs you and your neighbors need.
Without a complete, accurate census, your community may not receive its fair
share. Thank you in advance for your help.Sincerely, Robert M. Groves
Director, U.S. Census Bureau
My fair share huh? How about you people stop wasting my fair share and let me keep more of my fair share instead of spreading the wealth with my fair share.
US Census Form Letter Promises ‘Fair Share’ of Federal Money
Oh and when you get the Census form here is the answer for question number 9…
Sending a Message with the Census
We should answer Question 9 by checking the last option — “Some other race” — and writing in “American.” It’s a truthful answer but at the same time is a way for ordinary citizens to express their rejection of unconstitutional racial classification schemes. In fact, “American” was the plurality ancestry selection for respondents to the 2000 census in four states and several hundred counties.
So remember: Question 9 — “Some other race” — “American”. Pass it on.
And if they have a problem with that then we might want to remind them of the government funded Ad Council advertisement… “I am an American.”
Gee I hate it when you can use their own propaganda against them, that’s got to suck.
While I’m on the subject of the census I worked the 2000 Census and I couldn’t bring myself to work this one under the current so-called leadership. So let me let you in on a little secret – the census loves to tell people you can face fines for failing to answer the questions under 13 U.S.C. § 221 however to my knowledge in the history of this country never hes there been a single prosecution – not one. It’s an empty threat. Also you should know that if the census does not get the information from you they will go to your neighbors and quiz them about your family and your house to fill in the blanks. If that doesn’t work and the neighbor don’t talk the census work will park on the street and count people coming and going to make a educated guess – if you doubt that, don’t – I had to do it.
Now, I get the importance of the census for representation in Washington and for genealogy research in the future, however the questions on the long form are invasive and really nothing the government doesn’t already know or things the government doesn’t need to know. I short some of it is just none of their damn business. The good news is the long form will not be used in selected groups of the 2010 Census instead the bad news is they will be doing a annual community survey. So your chances of getting this form has increased by 10 fold – as it’s gone from a decade thing to a year thing…
Here are a few questions on the ACS form…
How many acres is this house or mobile home on?
Why does the census need this information?
How many automobiles, vans, and trucks of one-ton capacity or less are kept at home for use by members of this household?
Do you not have the DMV to see how many cars are in a given area?
How many of these rooms are bedrooms?
None of your damn business.
LAST MONTH, what was the cost of electricity for this house, apartment, or mobile home?
LAST MONTH, what was the cost of gas for this house, apartment, or mobile home?
IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS, what was the cost of water and sewer for this house, apartment, or mobile home?
There are a bunch of those questions and they are none of your damn business – if you’re not paying the bill you don’t need to know. Call the power plant and the propane services and ask them what the average sales are for an area per customer.
INCOME IN THE PAST 12 MONTHS
a. Wages, salary, commissions, bonuses, or tips from all jobs.
b. Self-employment income from own nonfarm businesses or farm businesses, including proprietorships and partnerships.
c. Interest, dividends, net rental income, royalty income, or income from estates and trusts.
Call the IRS I’m not answering those questions.
And it goes on and on and on for 28 pages of questions most of which are none of the government business and I say that as a former Census supervisor.

You could write “homo sapien sapiens,” which contains 19 characters including spaces, and conveniently fits in the 19 squares allocated for “print race.” Homo sapien sapiens is a scientific term that simply means modern human beings.
