Tea Party Convention in Nashville to allow streaming Webcast and broadcast in response to critics
This weekend’s Tea Party Convention in Nashville, under criticism that high ticket prices are preventing true grassroots activists from attending, made a surprise announcement late Sunday night that the convention will be televised.
Tea Party Nation, the group sponsoring the event that starts Thursday, said it is working with internet media company PJTV, FOX News, CNN and Reuters TV to “allow the millions of Tea Party activists who could not be in attendance to view many of the proceedings live along with special interviews of delegates and speakers alike.”
I’ll admit it I was one of those critics; I thought $550+ for a ticket was outrageous! Add that to the travel, food and lodging and in “these tough economic times the toughest since the Great Depression” it was a rip-off and violated the idea of what the Tea Party moment was founded on and that being less wasteful spending and frankly spending $3500 or so to go to a convention to hear people bitch about out of control spending just didn’t add up. It seemed to run headlong into the very hypocrisy that we’re complaining about and I will not be apart of that and made that fact known.
Now let me tick a few people off and rag on Sarah Palin a bit or at least her agents. I like Palin, she represents those forgotten people the middle American taxpayer that is neither subsidy poor or elitist rich and I like that. However, she is charging $100,000.00 speaking fee – I think this is ridiculous – I know she says she is putting 100% of it in her PAC but, what Palin could have and should have done was to charge only her expenses and set up tables, booths, whatever to collect money at the convention for her PAC and likely she would have gotten a lot more money as people would know exactly how much of their money was going to the PAC and the damn ticket price would have been a lot cheaper giving the attendees extra money to give to candidates or PAC’s. If it’s all about the PAC money and not personal gain why not do this?
I’m all for capitalism and making a buck, but even I have lines I do not cross and that is the line of taking advantage of people just because I can – I like to refer to it as this little thing called ‘ethics’. Something that is in short supply in that day and age, when I questioned the price of these tickets in an e-mail exchange I was told “Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann are going to be there.” Well big freaking deal I can see both on TV about anytime and Bachmann has since withdrawn for legal reasons. Besides you could toss in Limbaugh, Beck, Levin, Ingraham, Bruce, Rove, and who knows whom else and I still wouldn’t pony up $550.00 for a ticket – I’m just to cheap.
Frankly, the way this entire Tea Party convention has been handled as undermined the very essences of what it is all about and that has to stop or it will be all for not. At least in the they wised up and decided to allow web and TV access this will go along way to polish their tarnished image, but they still have work to do.
(Oh random thought about Sarah Palin while I’m on the subject not worth a stand alone post – Rahm Emanuel needs to be fired for many reasons but Palin getting on the political correctness bandwagon over Rahm using the word “retarded” is a little flawed. Isn’t it political correctness that got all those folk killed at Ft Hood? I think so, as I’ve said I like Palin but I’m not going to give anyone a pass when they “act stupidly” and to talk about the evils of PC as she did on Ft Hood and then play the PC card on a word is – hypocrisy and I won’t stand for it on either side of the political aisle. So stop it.)
