Yes I spent a pretty good piece of Saturday at the 129th Fancy Farm, KY 2009 political picnic where those wanting to run for office go to be heard. Hell, I should have gotten up there as I could have made a better speech than some of the ones I heard… not all of them bad but some were really lacking.
Interestingly none of the big player in the Kentucky political world bothered to show up… not the Governor, any Senators, Congressman no one… this is unusual… perhaps they are not looking to be re-elected. There were a few state politicians the worthless Fred Nesler (D) and the it’s takes 3 months to answer a e-mail Ken Winters (R) along with a few others minor players. However, most of the ones running for office were there.
We heard from a wide assortment all vying for Jim Bunning’s seat from Daniel Mongiardo (D), Jack Conway (D), Trey Grayson (R), Darlene Fitzgerald Price (D), Bill Johnson (R), Maurice Sweeney (D) and Rand Paul (R) naturally I agreed with nearly nothing coming out of the Democrats mouth as a couple tried to play it centrist, but few bought it at least I didn’t.
Let’s review in order of speeches…
Daniel Mongiardo (D) is your standard politician he smoozed the crowd with the his entourage, smiling and taking photos I spoke briefly with him and I asked a simple question “Why should I vote for you?” he started with a few canned gobblity-gook answers that really said nothing, but sounded good… so I moved on. I think he thinks I bought it but he’s wrong. He speech was your standard fair “I’m going to change things, vote for me that other guy sucks.” Nothing momentous.
You can hear Mongiardo’s speech here.
Jack Conway (D) what a scum-bag (at least he seemed that way to me) I didn’t get a chance to meet him but I heard all I need to hear on the stage. He is very much a game playing pretty-boy politician who is only in for himself… not only was he at the CATHOLIC political picnic he thought it would be cute to toss in a couple of profanities while speaking. (Hey Jack I bet your mom would be happy to know she is a bitch.) Conway also said that Kentucky had the number 1 drop out rate in the country, well this is a flat out falsehood. There are actually 7 states with higher drop out rates… Kentucky being number 8 is still not good but we’re not first so that was a flat out lie and lying in a speech is worse. But why should he want to make Kentucky look good he graduated from Duke. So Conway is a pants on fire fibber.
You can hear Jack Conway’s speech here.
Trey Grayson (R) I went up to Fancy Farm with the intention of supporting Trey Grayson, but watching his entourage and his smoozing he just seemed manufactured and playing the political game. What really pissed my off and I should of taken a picture of it was his minions blocking video and photographs with his signs and don’t know what’s up with that but I told him it was no way to get votes, he just smiled and I said that “I say this as a conservative, think about it.” Maybe the videographer was from the opposition but why say anything to a voter you wouldn’t want on record? Unless you are lying… just saying.
You can hear Trey Grayson’s speech here.
Darlene Fitzgerald Price (D) OMG what an annoying voice! Yea, I said it. I was standing listening to her and a older couple next to me said “That’s our daughter” and before I could filter myself I said “I liked her better before she started talking.” Yeah, I said it. Her speech was rather disjointed as many of the minor candidates where. Yeah, I said it. She’ll be dropping out soon as she’s just to polarizing in my opinion from the looks of her website. (She isn’t a Palin)

Bill Johnson (R) is another minor canidate that seems like a nice enough guy, his speech needed work and he had some good points. He made a little to much of his war veteran status I thought and I can say that because I’m one too. But over all if he got a speech writer and practiced his speeches he’d do better as again it was somewhat all over the board and not completely focused. (I’m guilty of that but I try to go back and clear it up… you can’t do that on a speech.)
You can hear Bill Johnson’s speech here.
Maurice Sweeney (D) speech was all over the place, I’m not sure what he said and he was very much a Obama-bot, he seemed like a nice enough guy, however his speech wondered so much it was hard to listen to and pay attentions… so Hey Maurice a little tip… make some notes.
You can hear Maurice Sweeney’s speech here.
Rand Paul (R) the son of Ron Paul (R-TX) gave the most realistic non canned speech, he wasn’t the best speaker but I think he was the most listen to as it did not seem phony. Rand was very much in line with has Dad on economic issues which I agreed with and as a bonus he didn’t seem as “out there” as his Dad. That was my only problem with Ron Paul is that he was an A+ on economics, but was a C- at best on many other issues not that his opinions were bad he just seemed a little nutty. Rand Paul didn’t seem nutty and he may very well have my support but it’s still to early to tell.
You can hear Rand Paul’s speech here.
Every circus needs a clown as a sideshow event Gatewood Galbraith was there… ol’ Gatewood has been running for political office for 30 years on the legalize pot campaign. He is running for Governor again for the 2011 campaign and you can check out his campaign site here. Interestingly I haven’t found anything about pot on his site but I’ll admit I didn’t spend much time on it, I just know that has been his platform in the past and all of his supporters appeared to be mostly comprised of those stuck in the 60′s peace, love and happiness crowd… not that there is anything wrong with that. He was giving out autographed copied if his autobiography and I almost got one as a item of curiosity but I passed, maybe next year.
I did pick up a pound each of mutton and pork along with some sauce and a cookbook that I needed (that’s a lie I have 100′s of regional cookbooks) and I was going to get a political book I can’t think of the name of right now but I looked at it and I thought nice little paperback book, but it’s not worth $20.00! OH I found it on Amazon it’s called “True Tales of Old-Time Kentucky Politics: Bombast, Bourbon & Burgoo (Paperback)” by Berry Craig and it’s only $13.59 on Amazon. I don’t know Berry Craig I’m sure his is a nice guy, but I’m willing to bet his autograph isn’t adding $6.50 to the books value. I would have gone $15.00 but not $20.00 it’s only about 120 pages long paperback. But it would seem that from my old friend Google Mr. Berry Craig is a bit of a liberal to quote “Don’t get me wrong. I’m a union-card carrying community college teacher who voted for Obama.” so I don’t see myself contributing to his coffers anytime soon… I’m just not going to share my wealth.

RAND PAUL 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fancy Farm 2009 Republicans Trey Grayson and Rand Paul VideosFancy Farm 2009 Democrats Jack Conway and Daniel Mongiardo Videos
Thanks for the linky!
Glad to hear I’m not the only one that got that impression from Trey Grayson. The obvious arrogance and canned answers, combined with that whole “traveling with an entourage” thing was just a bit much. The Democrats gave their usual “I’m really a borderline Socialist, but I’m trying to not sound like it” speeches, and the Republicans overused “conservative” to the point of making it unbelievable.
Bill Johnson and Rand Paul won for the day on the speakers’ platform, I believe, and Dr. Paul is my choice, his interaction with the public getting him countless gold stars for the day.
And did you notice how BOTH sides shut up to listen to Dr. Paul? Nice.
