Often I write of politics, ok most of the time I write of politics … but sometimes things happen that are of a greater importance than even the state of the nation. Sometimes there are forces at work that seem to defy explanation. Now I know what you are saying, you’re saying “Dave, what could be worse than the sate of the country, what could be worse than ‘these tough economic times, the worse economic times since the great depression’ what could be worse than that, do tell?
Well, I’ll ya. It’s the price of potato chips … yeah and not just potato chip it’s corn chip too. What’s up? I mean a bag of chips is $3.50 at freakin’ Big Lots! Big Lots, I love that store it’s like a treasure hunt, you never know what you’re going to find, but chips, $3.50 … please. It wasn’t that long ago that they were $2.00 for a bag half filled with air, is there a sudden shortage of potatoes and I didn’t get the memo? They can’t blame the gas prices anymore so why are freckin’ chips $3.50 a stinkin’ bag? (That’s the Big Lot’s price the price printed on the bag is $4.49) So are they GOLDen potatoes? Are they potatoes lovingly hand harvested by the Vestal virgins the goddesses of the hearth? What am I missing here? Now, I’m not talking about a big ‘ol feed a family of four bag, I’m talking about a regular ‘ol bag of chips for $3.50 on discount. Even the small Frito’s bag is $3.00, not the tiny little bag, but the regular size bag. I don’t get it. In ‘these tough economic times, the worst since the great depression’ we can’t afford to spending $3.50 even discounted on a bag chips. I have to forgo my chip indulgence, I have to sacrifice my chips.
So let me tell you something there Barry Obama, you asked of sacrifices, you said we had to get some skin in the game. Well I can’t even afford potato skin chips anymore, better yet chips made from whole potatoes. So I’ve made my sacrifice, my obligation is met, my conscious is clear … I can sleep at night now … I hope you’re happy.
And by the way, it’s not just chips as you more than likely know, it’s all food products have skyrocketed in price. Cokes/Sodas/Pop whatever you call them have nearly doubled for name brands, most other staples are up 35-40% in some cases and other products have kept their shelf price nearly the same. but reduced the size of the product. So look at it carefully when you buy, the box/can/bottle might appear to be the same old size, but the amount listed inside it will be less. I’ve noticed this in fast food too, I don’t eat a lot of fast food but I noticed the last time I got a burger from Burger King is was slightly small than the one I got months before … so either the burger go smaller or my hands got bigger. I’m inclined to think the burger got smaller.
